Scottish Government funded External Wall Appraisal and Fire Risk Assessments for blocks of flats over 11 metres

The Scottish Government's Building Standards Division are running a pilot project to fund external wall system appraisals as well as a fire risk assessment of 25 blocks of flats in Scotland. The Scotland Branch of the IFE were asked to assist with the identification of competent fire engineers to carry out the appraisals and to advise whether the buildings are safe or need remedial work to remove the existing cladding. We will update this item once the pilot is competed and the project can be rolled out for all relevant blocks of flats.

Dr Eric Marchant Award

Following the death of Dr Eric Marchant earlier this year, the Scotland Branch Council have decided to honour his contributions to fire engineering and the Scotland Branch in particular. One suggestion is to make an award to a nominated fire engineer in Scotland who has demonstrated outstanding knowledge and skills during the delivery of a fire engineering project in Scotland. Another option is to arrange a lecture competition on a fire engineering topic of the candidate's choice.

The final decision wil depend on what SIFE members think would be the most appropriate way to recognise Eric's lifetime contribution to the fire engineering sector.

The Branch Council would be delighted to receive your thoughts on the matter. Please visit our Contact page and submit your thoughts.
